If the UK had been attacked with nuclear weapons, Thatcher and co would have hidden in a bunker somewhere, where as soon as they did anything to try to communicate with the outside world (what outside world?!) they would have been bombed to smithereens. Meanwhile the Queen was to have been bundled off in the royal yacht to somewhere in the north where she would have been outside the reach of Russian radar. She would then have had to appoint a new PM.

Luckily she was to be accompanied by her hubby, her private secretary and a minister, so that there would have been the Privy Council quorum needed to make the appointment. Such a relief – imagine the chaos if she hadn’t been able to appoint a new PM! It’s good to know our leaders had thought everything through…
